The Competing Corridors

We are all strung together in this age of global citizenship. The nature of connectedness and dependence varies but social upheavals in any region affect us all. No state can claim that its actions have nothing to do with other states.

The major projects of nations are not just theirs, but these initiatives have a lot to do with other nations too. The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is one such project that falls under the much wider Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The stated goal is to improve the interconnectivity of China’s international logistics network by building and upgrading a variety of roads and railway infrastructure. Such big projects connecting different regions and countries play a significant role in the relations and interests of involved countries but can also cause serious tensions among other nations.

Regional Tensions

CPEC has not failed to rile up some in the neighborhood and beyond. China’s neighbor and strategic rival, India, sits on the other side of the aisle and considers it a threat and insecurity as it poses a risk to India’s position in the region. While regarded as a game changer for Pakistan’s economy and regional connectivity and cooperation, CPEC has the potential to tip the balance of power in the region. In addition, India perceives CPEC as a threat to and violation of its sovereignty, as the route passes through Pakistan-administered Kashmir, a territory claimed by India. The route is not far from the site of the India-China clashes in 2020 which have kept the tensions high between the two countries.

Emerging Alternative

CPEC has also raised alarms among other regional stakeholders like the US and some other countries in the Middle East and Europe. The possibility of China’s increasing influence in South Asia has made other powers worried. The US in particular has serious concerns about China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) because it believes it could upend the geo-political landscape. The US has recently proposed an alternative project of infrastructural development but without China. The initiative is formally known as the India-Middle East – Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC).

IMEC refers to the interconnectedness of regions spanning from the Indian subcontinent to the Middle East and Europe. This vast region includes diverse countries with different political, economic, and security dynamics. Recent years have witnessed increasing connectivity and dependence within this region with improving trade and energy ties, migration, and evolving security challenges. For Europe and India, the Middle East is a big source of oil and gas. China, too, depends on this region for its energy. This makes energy security a crucial aspect of BRI and IMEC. Energy from this region plays a vital role in shaping Europe’s foreign policy towards the region, therefore several European countries also perceive China’s Belt and Road Initiative as a future threat.

Final Remarks

All these things coming together have created new war zones and tensions in the relationships in the Indian subcontinent, the Middle East, and Europe. Competition for influence and access to resources can fuel tensions and conflict, posing challenges to regional stability and global order. But it’s important to remember that even though these initiatives are creating challenges, there are also opportunities for countries to work together for prosperity and wealth generation. What is required is for all stakeholders to collaborate to create a win-win formula that protects each country’s interests and regional peace.
